THE JOURNEY
THE JOURNEY
This is the South Island beyond the familiar coach-tour circuit. Even over Lunar New Year, the upper South Island and Golden Bay can still feel remarkably removed from the crowds. Walk beside the jewel-clear coves and golden beaches of Abel Tasman, then reach Wharariki Beach—a place millions may recognise from a computer screen without ever knowing its name. If New Zealand is the end of the world, this feels like the end of New Zealand. From there, the wild West Coast leads south through world-class temperate rainforest, to the rare sight of rainforest and glaciers sharing the same landscape. Nine days take you from an iconic image into a quieter, wilder and more surprising New Zealand.
DAY BY DAY
Arrive in Christchurch
Christchurch
Overnight: ChristchurchArrive and settle into the journey at an easy pace. Depending on your arrival time, there may be space for a gentle first look at the city—perhaps Hagley Park, the Avon River or the coast—without turning the first day into a checklist.
The Pacific road to Kaikōura
Christchurch → Kaikōura
Overnight: KaikōuraTravel north as the road meets the Pacific and the Kaikōura ranges rise behind the coast. There is time to enjoy the peninsula, mountain-and-sea views and the character of this small coastal town. Whale watching and wildlife encounters can be discussed as optional experiences and are never guaranteed.
Wildlife sightings and whale-watching activities depend on conditions and availability.
North through Marlborough
Kaikōura → Blenheim → Havelock → Pelorus Bridge → Nelson
Overnight: NelsonLeave Kaikōura and continue through the changing landscapes of Marlborough. Vineyards, small harbour towns and the green Pelorus valley mark the transition toward Nelson. This is a scenic transfer day: the interest lies in the road itself and in choosing the right places to pause.
Abel Tasman to Golden Bay
Nelson → Abel Tasman → Takaka
Overnight: TakakaMove from Nelson toward the golden beaches and clear coves of Abel Tasman. Forest tracks and sheltered water bring a softer rhythm before the road climbs toward Takaka and Golden Bay. Walking and water-based activities can be shaped around the time available.
Kayaking and water-taxi experiences are optional and require separate confirmation.
The far edge of Golden Bay
Takaka → Te Waikoropupū Springs → Wharariki Beach
Overnight: TakakaSpend the day deeper in Golden Bay. Clear spring water and quiet forest give way to the dunes, wind and immense open space of Wharariki Beach. With the right tide and light, the sea arches and reflections create one of the journey’s most memorable landscapes.
Across the top of the West Coast
Takaka → Tōtaranui → Murchison → Buller Gorge → Cape Foulwind → Westport
Overnight: WestportA varied road day links Golden Bay with the northern West Coast. The route passes golden sand, inland valleys and the Buller Gorge before reaching the exposed headland at Cape Foulwind and finishing in Westport. Stops are balanced carefully so the day remains enjoyable.
Fur seals may be seen in the area, but wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.
The wild coast to glacier country
Westport → Punakaiki → Fox Glacier
Overnight: Fox GlacierFollow one of the South Island’s most dramatic coastal roads. Punakaiki’s layered rocks and powerful surf introduce a day of rainforest, bridges and remote shoreline before the route reaches Fox Glacier country. A Charleston glowworm experience can be considered separately.
Charleston glowworm experiences are optional and subject to availability.
Rainforest, Haast Pass and Wānaka
Fox Glacier → Haast Pass → Wānaka
Overnight: WānakaBegin among glacier-country mountains and West Coast rainforest, then cross Haast Pass through waterfalls and deep river valleys. Blue Pools may be considered when access and conditions allow; the day ends as the landscape opens beside Lake Wānaka.
Blue Pools access and any glacier activities depend on current track, weather and operating conditions. Mist, snow and other seasonal Wānaka moods shown in the photographs are possibilities, not guaranteed conditions.
Southern lakes to Queenstown
Wānaka → Queenstown
Enjoy a final Wānaka morning before travelling toward Queenstown. Depending on road and weather conditions, the alpine route may add wide views from the Crown Range. Arrive beside Lake Wakatipu as the guided journey comes to an end.
The Crown Range route is conditional and may change with weather or road conditions.
