THE JOURNEY
THE JOURNEY
This nine-day journey brings together two sides of the South Island: the quieter northern landscapes that reward those willing to venture beyond the usual circuit, and the central alpine scenery many travellers dream of seeing. From remote-feeling coasts and forested corners, the road turns inland toward clear glacial lakes and snow-framed peaks. It is a chance to discover lesser-known corners without missing the island’s best-loved mountain country.
DAY BY DAY
Arrive in Christchurch
Christchurch
Overnight: ChristchurchArrive in Christchurch and let the journey begin gently. Depending on your flight time, there may be room for a first glimpse of the city—its leafy avenues, riverside paths or open green spaces—before settling in for the night. Today is deliberately unhurried: a chance to arrive, breathe and look forward to the road ahead.
Pacific coast, sea life and Kaikōura
Christchurch → Kaikōura
Overnight: KaikōuraFollow the Pacific north to Kaikōura, where the ocean seems to meet the mountains at the edge of the road. If conditions and availability allow, choose a marine experience: a fishing trip is the recommended pick, or go whale watching instead. Back on land, walk the coastal track in search of seals and head up to a lookout for a sweeping view of the peninsula, sea and Kaikōura ranges—a day shaped by the feeling that the wild is right there beside you.
Fishing and whale-watching trips depend on weather, sea conditions and operator availability; wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.
Across Marlborough to Nelson
Kaikōura → Blenheim → Havelock → Pelorus Bridge → Nelson
Overnight: NelsonLeave the Pacific behind for a day and watch the landscapes shift as you travel through Marlborough. The route passes Blenheim, the harbour character of Havelock and the forested river scenery around Pelorus Bridge before reaching Nelson. Rather than making this a string of hurried check-ins, the day follows the changing road: open country, sheltered waterways and a greener, quieter north.
Choose your Abel Tasman day
Nelson → Abel Tasman / Tōtaranui → Takaka
Overnight: TakakaToday offers two different ways to meet Abel Tasman—choose one, so the day has room to breathe. Take a boat into the national park and step ashore for a walk beside clear coves and golden sand; or drive north to Tōtaranui, a more remote-feeling beach known for its long sweep of sand and large DOC campground. One option brings the coastline to you by water, the other lets you linger at the park’s quieter northern edge. Afterwards, continue over the ranges to Takaka and the spacious calm of Golden Bay.
Boat and water-taxi schedules depend on season and operating conditions; the day’s option will be planned around timing and weather.
Springs, dunes and the far edge of Golden Bay
Takaka → Pupu Springs → Wharariki Beach → Takaka
Overnight: TakakaSet out from Takaka for a day that moves from still, crystal-clear water to a coast of wind, dunes and open horizons. At Pupu Springs, pause beside remarkable clear water framed by quiet greenery; later, Wharariki Beach opens into a vast landscape of sand, sea arches and reflections. Stay for the feeling of space and changing light, then return to Takaka with the sense of having reached one of the South Island’s far edges.
From Golden Bay to Hanmer Springs
Takaka → Hanmer Springs
Overnight: Hanmer SpringsLeave Golden Bay and travel south across the island, watching the scenery change from open northern bays to inland valleys and mountain foothills. This is a substantial road day, but not a blank transfer: the pleasure is in seeing the landscape turn over mile by mile and feeling the journey shift from remote coast toward the Southern Alps. Arrive in Hanmer Springs ready for a slower evening.
A Christchurch pause on the way to Tekapō
Hanmer Springs → Christchurch → Tekapō
Overnight: TekapōTravel from Hanmer Springs to Christchurch for lunch and a short city pause, then leave the coast-facing lowlands behind and continue inland. As the road opens into the Mackenzie Basin, the horizon grows wider and the light feels different; Tekapō’s lake-and-mountain setting makes a memorable contrast to the morning’s alpine foothills. A day of distinct chapters, from mountain town to city and out into big-sky country.
Aoraki / Mount Cook and the Mackenzie Basin
Tekapō → Aoraki / Mount Cook → Twizel
Overnight: TwizelSet out from Tekapō through the wide-open Mackenzie Basin toward Aoraki / Mount Cook. Lakes, braided rivers and the Southern Alps gather into one of the island’s defining high-country scenes; take time here to look up, linger and let the scale of the mountains sink in. Continue to Twizel beneath the enormous skies, with the day’s alpine views still fresh in mind.
